Frequently asked questions
What is LEGO Super Mario, exactly? How does it work?
Imagine a video game you build yourself! LEGO Super Mario playsets combine traditional LEGO bricks with an interactive, digital figure of Mario (or Luigi, or Peach!). This figure has LCD screens for eyes, mouth, and a chest display, plus a speaker that plays sounds and music from the games. It also has a color sensor and an accelerometer. When you build a course and move your interactive figure across special “action bricks” (like starting a Warp Pipe, jumping on a Goomba, or collecting a Power-Up), the figure reacts! It collects virtual coins, plays sound effects, and displays unique animations.
What's a good set to start with? Do I need a specific one?
Yes! You must start with one of the “Starter Course” sets. These are:
- Adventures with Mario Starter Course (71360)
- Adventures with Luigi Starter Course (71387)
- Adventures with Peach Starter Course (71403)
Each Starter Course includes the interactive figure (Mario, Luigi, or Peach), the essential Warp Pipe (start block), and the Goal Pole (end block), plus various enemies, obstacles, and action bricks needed to play. You can’t play without one of these figures!
Can I combine LEGO Super Mario sets with my regular LEGO bricks?
What kind of expansion sets are available?
There’s a huge variety!
- Expansion Sets: These add new characters (like Yoshi, Toad, Bowser Jr.), more enemies, new interactive elements (like spinning platforms, seesaws, lava bubbles), and unique biomes (desert, water, ghost house, airship).
- Power-Up Packs: These are small sets that give your interactive figure new outfits and abilities, like the Tanooki Mario Power-Up or the Frog Mario Power-Up.
- Character Packs: These are blind bags containing a mystery buildable character (like a Goomba, Blooper, or Boo) and an action brick for it. They’re great for expanding your enemy roster!
Can more than one person play at once?
Yes! If you have two or three different interactive figures (e.g., Mario and Luigi, or Mario, Luigi, and Peach), you can connect them via Bluetooth. This opens up cooperative challenges where players can work together to collect coins, or even compete to see who can get the highest score on a shared course. The figures even react to each other, making for some fun teamwork!
